Weinbar Rutz (Mitte)

In Berlin you cannot avoid mentioning the “mother” of the up-market wine bars, now one of the best restaurants in Germany. Founded in the Chausseestrasse in 1999 by the late Lars Rutz, it was the first and for a long time only address in the east of the city for wine connoisseurs who wanted to enjoy their wines without all the fuss and jargon. And even for novice wine drinkers, who found they were quickly able to overcome their initial apprehension to wine.

Later, successor and sommelier Billy Wagner introduced natural wines to the Rutz and in doing so started a huge new trend. Billy Wagner has since moved on to his own restaurant “Nobelhart und Schmutzig”, whilst in the Rutz head chef Marco Müller serves up innovative Michelin-starred cuisine together with excellent wines.
