A Museum for all the Senses

Since July 2016, the Vineum Bodensee – House for Wine, Culture and History in the historic Heilig-Geist-Spital of Meersburg - has enriched the cultural offering of the town. The 400-year old historic building, which has been elaborately and lovingly converted into a museum, now offers on 600 m2 on two floors an interactive and sensory tour of the cultural history of wine. Standing impressively in the entrance area of the VINEUM is a wine press from 1607 – one of the largest, oldest and still functioning wine presses in Europe. A media installation on the press itself brings to life - with loud creaking and groaning noises - the function of this technical monument. Wine is the link between history and culture; it also creates a meaningful bridge to put the region around Bodensee (Lake Constance) in a global context. This makes the VINEUM fascinating not only for the local population but also to a national and international audience.

Spread over two floors in rooms of differing sizes are exhibits which range from the informative and the curious to the interactive and the historical on the theme of Meersburg, Bodensee, wine and culture. An installation with 101 wine bottles from all over the world brings together all the wine regions around the globe. The starting point is one of the oldest wine bottles of the Bodensee from 1865. Aroma stations provide an opportunity to smell over 20 wine aromas found in Bodensee wines. The VIineum shop presents unusual wine accessories which illustrate the full range of the “wine and design” theme and exemplify the development of wine from foodstuff to luxury item and finally lifestyle product. The on-site Vinemathek provides small tasting samples of Bodensee wines. In addition to the regular museum operations, special exhibitions are held in the converted attic. A special cultural and event programme rounds off the portfolio of the Vineum Bodensee.
