Landmarks and Wineculture Details

The heritage of Roman times, here you can grasp it with your hands: in the cellar of the Vereinigte Hospitien in Trier. The origins of the wine cellar reach back to the year 330 when two big storehouses stood on the banks of the river Mosel, called "horreas" by the Romans. Here, wine was stored which had been brought upstream, products from the wine presses further down the river.

In Roman times, the buildings were 70 metres long and 20 metres wide. A part of the walls, reaching up to eight meters, is still preserved, forming a part of the wine cellars of the moderen day wine estate of the Vereinigte Hospitien. It is thus said to be the oldest wine cellar in Germany. Its entrance is decorated by a very well preserved clay brick floor from Roman times.

The Vereinigte Hospitien were created in 1805 by edict of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. He securalised several catholic monasteries existing here before, combining in his edict their former possessions to form one institution for the care of the olf and the sick. The thus formed Vereinigte Hospitien, however, also took over the property of vineyards from the former cloisters and monasteries, among them some of the best vineyard sites along the Mosel and the Saar river.

Today, the Vereinigte Hospitien are a non-profit public foundation which maintains a retired and a nursing home as well as some geriatric institutions. The vineyards, however, are managed by the wine estate Vereinigte Hospitien which also possesses the prove for the early cultivation of Riesling on the Mosel: In 1464, Riesling was mentioned as wine grape in one of the calculation books of the Hospital of Saint Jacob. Even today, 90 percent of the 25 hectares of vineyards owned by the wine estate, are still stocked with Riesling. The wine estate is a member of the Association of German Quality and Prädikat Wine Estates, VDP, and owns the most famous vineyard sites Trierer Augenschein, Wiltinger Hölle on the Saar river and the Saarfelder Schlossberg in Serrig.
